HInds Hospice, Fresno, Madera and Merced Hospice Care

OUR PROGRAMS

HOSPICE CARE SERVICES - Between 75-100 patients are seen in their homes or in residential facilities at any one time between Fresno, Madera and Merced counties. Our hospice interdisciplinary teams of nurses, home health aides, social workers, chaplains, counselors and volunteers will visit a patient, where they live, making sure they are as comfortable as possible.

HINDS HOSPICE HOME - Nancy Hinds began caring for patients experiencing their end-of-life journey in her own home in 1981. The current, six-bed capacity, Hospice Home, located on Twain Avenue in Fresno, opened its doors in 1987 and has served over 3,300 patients. On a quiet street surrounded by beautiful gardens, the Hinds Hospice Home is a welcoming environment to receive loving, compassionate, around-the-clock, end-of-life care. Admission to the Hinds Hospice Home can occur when a patient requires a higher level of care than can be provided in their own home environment. It is the only inpatient hospice home available in Fresno, Madera and Merced Counties.

CENTER FOR GRIEF AND LOSS -The Hinds Hospice Center for Grief and Loss is unique in that it serves not only hospice families, but also the community at large with grief support services. The professional staff is available to:

  • meet with individuals providing one-on-one grief counseling.
  • provide support for sudden and tragic loss.
  • conduct numerous 12 and 8 week long Grief Support Group sessions throughout the year that pertain to the specific type of loss.
  • provide grief support mailings for a period of 13 months to families who are mourning the loss of a loved one.

PERINATAL HOSPICE - ANGEL BABIES / BEBITOS ANGELITOS - The news of an unborn baby being diagnosed with a life limiting condition is heartbreaking. As part of the Hinds Hospice Center for Grief and Loss, Angel Babies / Bebitos Angelitos offers a perinatal hospice program designed for families who have received this diagnosis, offering support and comfort during pregnancy and providing ideas for creating loving memories. Hospice services are available for babies who survive their birth and are in need of special care. This care can be provided in the baby's home or in the Hinds Hospice Home. This program assists families to both welcome and enjoy their baby and, when necessary, to say goodbye. The program supports families who have suffered miscarriage, still birth or other infant loss.

PEDIATRIC HOSPICE - Children require different care than adults. Therefore, we have a pediatric hospice program to provide terminally ill children with the specialized care that they need where they are most comfortable - their own home. If home care is not an option, we can care for them at the Hinds Hospice Home.

THRIFT STORES - The thrift stores operated by Hinds Hospice are currently located in Fresno, Madera, Kerman, Chowchilla and Sanger. They provide discounted clothing, household items and furniture to those in need in the communities we serve, while helping sustain the agency's primary mission of care. These stores are our way of giving back to the community, but also act to offset the un-reimbursed costs of care we provide.

COMMUNITY AND PHYSICIAN EDUCATION - In an effort to increase physician awareness of what hospice and palliative care can provide to patients and their families, Hinds Hospice provides practical end-of-life care training to doctors, nurses, and residents locally, at the University of California, San Francisco, and the University of California, Davis.

MULTICULTURAL OUTREACH -With the Central Valley's diverse population, we have developed a comprehensive program offering Spanish and Hmong populations hospice education, care and materials appropriate to both their culture and language. We also travel to the rural areas to offer bereavement support to those without transportation to our offices for grief counseling services.

PRISON HOSPICE - A program that educates and trains life sentenced inmates at the Chowchilla Women's Prison to provide hospice care and grief and loss support for fellow inmates.
